Traylor’s Blue Plains Tunnel (BPT) project in Washington, DC has been awarded the Engineering News Record (ENR) Best of the Best Project for 2016. The BPT was selected from an impressive group of jobs that included more than 700 projects from all 50 states.
Construction of the 24,000 foot long, 26 foot diameter combined sewer overflow tunnel was completed in early 2016. The work included construction of five deep shafts ranging from 50 to 132 feet in diameter. An innovative mucking system with a custom-designed 110-ton gantry crane and muck box carousel helped Lady Bird, the earth pressure balance tunnel boring machine, mine under and adjacent to the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers at an aggressive rate. At the end of the project, the team had delivered more than 1.4 million man hours with zero lost time injuries.
